Defensive v Supportive Climates at DTCC.

Providing a supportive climate in the workplace is essential for the well-being and productivity of staff members. A workplace with a supportive environment makes employees feel valued, appreciated, and supported by supervisors and coworkers. According to Cameron and Seppälä (2015), an organization that provides its employees with a positive climate in the workplace is more likely to be successful and achieve higher levels of organizational effectiveness. In my organization, the climate is very supportive. Employees, including myself, feel comfortable expressing ideas, thoughts, concerns, and ideas. In addition, workers are encouraged to work together and collaborate to achieve common goals. Even though all workers are from different countries, the members have positive attitudes, always willing to help others. Open communication, trust, recognition, appreciation, flexibility, and collaboration are some of the characteristics that represent the institution where I work.

The results of my Communication Climate Inventory revealed the following scores:

Defensive score: 88

Supportive score: 26

My analysis of the results confirmed that the climate at the organization where I work is supportive. Indeed, I love my job, and I feel proud to be part of the team since immediate supervisors contribute by being respectful, empathetic, and caring. In addition, the feedback I receive is constructive, effective, and timely, making my work experience more enriching and comfortable.

Understanding how Effective Communication can Impact the Motivational Climate of an Organization.

Effective communication is vital in creating a positive motivational climate within a company since it fosters trust, transparency, and collaboration, increasing employee engagement, job satisfaction, and productivity. Williams (2017) highlighted in his magazine that leaders could demotivate employees with authoritarian attitudes toward decisions. Also, Willians (2027) suggested that business leaders should encourage input to find solutions and reach the team's achievements. The communication climate of a company or team refers to the tone, attitudes, and openness of communication within the group (Kasza & Rogers, 2022). Indeed, a positive communication climate can positively impact employees' motivation and organizational commitment. When communication is open, respectful, and transparent, workers trust the team and the process, boosting employees' morale and helping them feel more involved in the project's outcome. (Indeed Editorial Team, 2022).

Improving the communication climate in a department, organization, or team is essential. Nonetheless, it requires a concerted effort and willingness to make changes for good. My organization, for example, has a positive and effective communication climate, and I think there is nothing to improve since everything looks excellent. However, I can provide some strategies that help improve the communication climate.

1. Active listening: Paying full attention to the speaker without interrupting or judging them is essential as it demonstrates that we respect and value the speaker's ideas. (MindToolsVideos, 2015).

2. Empathy: Being empathetic is vital in the work field as it means you try to understand the speaker's thoughts, ideas, and experiences. Being empathetic can create a more positive and supportive communication climate. (Browner, 2021).

3. Provide effective and positive feedback: Providing effective and constructive feedback encourages positive communication and helps reinforce positive behaviors. When people appreciate others' contributions, it can make them feel motivated and valued. (Porath, 2026).

4. Have a positive attitude: Respecting and supporting the team members is crucial, even when disagreeing with their thoughts or beliefs.

Communication Skills I would Like to Learn or Improve.

After reading the course material and doing outside research, I believe that there are some communication aspects I need to improve, including active listening and non-verbal communication. Sometimes, I interrupt people when they are talking; however, my intention is not to ignore what they are saying; it is just that I tend to forget what I want to say. Nonetheless, I have understood that it is vital to pay attention and focus on what the speaker is saying to avoid misunderstandings and stop thinking about what I want to reply or say. Another skill I would like to improve is non-verbal communication, especially facial expressions and tone of voice. In some opportunities, my output has been misunderstood due to my body language and low tone of voice.
